Autumntime, and the livin' is eas(ier)
When I was a kid, I never cared much for the fall season. Summer is over, the weather turns cool, and children have to go back to school.
Now that I'm an adult, I find I actually look forward to autumn. Summer is over, the weather turns cool, and children have to go back to school.
Funny how the same things look different when you are on the other side of them. So now that fall is an enjoyable time of year, I am developing an enjoyment of the colors and symbols that reflect the season.
I notice when I travel to the east, there is much more on display in the neighborhoods and yards. I have always found that to be fun and festive, so I am interested in bringing some of that here to the C+C household.

Before & After
What a difference a day made
Twenty-four little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers
Where there used to be rain
My yesterday was blue, dear
Today I'm part of you, dear
My lonely nights are through, dear
Since you said you were mine
What a difference a day makes
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy
Since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss
It's heaven when you find romance on your menu
What a difference a day made
And the difference is you
What a difference a day makes
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy
Since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss
It's heaven when you find romance on your menu
What a difference a day made
And the difference is you

Veteran criminal Nathan Pugh, 49 walked in to a Wells Fargo bank in Dallas on July 26 and presented his holdup note to a teller (claiming to have a 'bom'). The teller told Pugh that she could not release large amounts of money without proper ID and convinced Pugh to turn over both a Texas state ID card and his Wells Fargo debit card, both in his own name. Police arrived just as Pugh was leaving and after an attenpt to grab a hostage, he was arrested. (He even failed with the hostage--a woman carrying a child---who still managed to take Pugh to the floor.) [Dallas Morning News, 8-5-10]

Shocking: Levin Johnston Shopping Tell-AllLie Book About Sarah Palin
"...After all, he's accomplished so much -- he had unprotected sex with a younger girl, got her knocked up, and then abandoned her. And then, fearing that he soon might have to get a real job, he tricked her into accepting a false marriage proposal so he could sell the story to Us weekly for $100,000 (and also shop a reality show about the sham marriage)..." - Ace of Spades
Can We Dispense, Now, With The Myth That They Feel Our Pain?
"Honestly, I don’t care about the frequency with which our King and his Queen vacation from the tough grind of their having to talk out of both sides of their mouths. And I’ve long since grown accustomed to taking a shiv in the back at the 4th rib from the Monarchy on a fairly routine basis.…but, can we please stop now with the nonsense of being asked to believe that our rulers are just private folk?" - Redstate
Robert Gibbs: Obama’s Economic Team ‘Exhausted’

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters is seeking paid demonstrators to march and chant in its current picket line outside the McPherson Building, an office complex here where the council says work is being done with nonunion labor.Something else, like watching my Maury and Judge Judy reruns. So look for the union label, printed up by some 10 year old Honduran kids probably.
"For a lot of our members, it's really difficult to have them come out, either because of parking or something else," explains Vincente Garcia, a union representative who is supervising the picketing.
I found this from my hero, Ace of Spades, who got it from the Wall Street Journal.

Democratic leaders and major party donors plan to hold a lavish 80th birthday gala for Rep. But we worked hard for our pariah status
How high does that support have to get before it stops being considered "controversial"? Just wondering.
Red-faced Boston city councilors who boldly voted to shun the state of Arizona over its new immigration crackdown are now showing signs of boycotter’s regret.
Yes, that's Boston. As in Massachusetts.
Americans' initial reactions to the U.S. Justice Department lawsuit against Arizona's new illegal immigration law are more negative than positive, by a 50% to 33% margin....The margin of opposition to the lawsuit is highest among those who are following news about the law most closely.
Well, you can't trust Gallup polling, can you?

Some Good News
Charity Joins Top Home Builders' Ranks
Habitat for Humanity Keeps Putting Up Houses as Nation's Biggest Companies Cut Back;
'A Lot Less Tied to the Market'
From the Wall Street Journal
EAST PATCHOGUE, N.Y.—A dozen female volunteers gathered recently in this blue-collar Long Island town, enduring the heat to help form the entryway of an 1,100-square foot home for Cheri Sabolenko and her two young children.
The Sabolenko house will soon join more than 5,000 other homes expected to be built, repaired and rehabilitated in the U.S. this year by a well-known addition to the upper echelon of America's largest home builders: the nonprofit group Habitat for Humanity International.
As the housing and financial crisis struck several years ago, the large publicly traded builders, including D.R. Horton Inc. and KB Home, pulled back. But Habitat kept building.
"We're a lot less tied to the market as a whole," said Mark Andrews, Habitat's senior director for U.S. operations. "We've been able to keep chugging along at a pretty solid pace."
As a result, Habitat, a Christian group founded 34 years ago in Americus, Ga., around a philosophy of constructing and rehabilitating homes for low-income families, was recently ranked as one of the nation's top 10 builders for the first time in a closely watched industry list compiled by Builder Magazine.
Habitat was ranked eighth, based on the number of homes sold and closed, placing it above Ryland Group Inc. and behind Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. Habitat's closings, which include new homes and rehabs, were down 3% to 5,294 in 2009. Ryland's tumbled 30%, while Hovnanian's sank 50%.
But this is the part that I really like:
In June, Wells Fargo announced an $8 million contribution to Habitat, which said the funds will help its neighborhood rehabilitation program. Last year, Habitat completed 710 rehabs, a count that should increase this year, while its new-build count could fall by about 8%, the group estimates.Wells Fargo has been a long-time supporter of Habitat, both through contributions and volunteers. I'm proud of the work we do to help in our communities.

Let's have some fun with demographics
I'm not surprised to see all the black lines from the northeast and upper midwest. We also get more than our fair share of California refugees. I am surprised to see as many red lines. I suspect our 20-year population boom has slowed or ended. Or there could be some snowbird migration showing, particularly to the north.
Oh, here's the map for State College, PA
Hmm, mostly red lines. But I can see a black line moving from Pima County, AZ. Wonder what would have caused that??
Go to the website and have some fun with other counties. If you want a real laugh (or cry), be sure to click on Detroit and Los Angeles. Gives new meaning to the concept of hemorrhaging.
I do want to thank Ace Of Spades HQ for alerting me to this.

Fortunately, our conciliatory post-racial president is doing his best to reduce tensions and appeal for calm.

We were obliged to knock some heads together, resulting in a massive re-work with the re-laying of the entire deck. OBTW- adding an additional foot of width at no extra expense to C&C. Schweeet ...Cha-ching- $$.
Behold,... the new vitamin fortified pool deck (version 2.0).

Birthday Salute
She has the dubious pleasure of residing in the congressional district of one Representative Brian Baird, Democrat. You may not recognize the name, but you probably remember his comment:
"What we're seeing right now [referring to town hall protesters] is close to Brown Shirt tactics. I mean that very seriously."After reversing his refusal to stoop to actually meeting in person with those he represents (see above comment), he held a Town Hall meeting last September. My sister attended and spoke. Let me have her tell it:
Well, I guess we know how all that turned out:They held it in the auditorium at the community college which seats 500. They had an overflow room of about 100 and that maxed out too. We got there 30 minutes early and there was no room. Anyone who wanted to have 3 minutes to ask a question or give a comment signed up and got a number. Then they put the numbers in a lottery and drew them out. I was the 11th one picked. So I actually got to speak. I had to stop 4 times for people clapping too loud to be heard. I told the Congressman it was bigger than health care. It was TARP with increased Government regulations at tax payer expense, followed by the Stimulus, the Energy Bill which no one read because it was rush, rush, rush and this Health Care bill is again rush, rush on a bill that will change our whole country.
His response was he voted for TARP because everyone was told that the whole country would collapse if it wasn't passed immediately. He voted against the Stimulus. He held out against the Energy Bill but when he saw it would pass, he bargained to save the northwest forests and pulp manufacturing in exchange for his votes. And he says he was pushing for waiting on the health care. He actually has introduced an amendment for tort reform and is a cosponsor for the Audit the Fed bill. He has also introduced a bill that would require the bills be on the internet for 10 days before a Congress vote.
"Weighing the concerns against the benefits of the legislation, and considering that the status quo is unsustainable, I will vote for this legislation," Baird said in a statement.
So, what’s happened since that meeting? He announced his retirement last December, after six terms. Coincidence? You decide.
Congratulations to her and thanks for being willing to actively participate in our democracy. We should all do nothing less.
